If you run Google Search ads, Google Ads AI Max is no longer something you can ignore. Google is folding Dynamic Search Ads, automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match into it, and some of those settings switch over on their own this autumn. For a small business with a tight budget, the question is not whether AI Max is clever. It is whether it will spend your money on searches you would never have chosen.
Here is what AI Max does, what changes automatically and when, and a low-risk way to test it on your own account.
What Google Ads AI Max actually is
AI Max is not a new campaign type. It is a set of features you switch on inside an existing Search campaign. According to Google’s own help documentation, it has three parts:
- Search term matching. Uses broad match and keywordless technology to show your ads on relevant searches beyond the keywords you added.
- Text customization. Writes variations of your headlines and descriptions based on your landing pages, existing ads and keywords.
- Final URL expansion. Sends people to whichever page on your site Google thinks best matches their search, rather than only the URL you set.
If you turn on final URL expansion, text customization has to be on as well, so the ad copy matches the page it points to.
What changes automatically, and when
Google announced the migration in April 2026. The dates from Google’s announcement are the ones to put in your calendar:
| What | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match | September 2026 | Upgraded to AI Max automatically, with search term matching and text customization switched on by default. |
| New Dynamic Search Ads campaigns | September 2026 | You can no longer create new DSA campaigns. |
| Existing Dynamic Search Ads | February 2027 | Auto-upgraded. Dynamic ad groups become standard ad groups, keeping their settings and data. |
Google’s announcement does not describe a way to opt out. Its advice is to upgrade voluntarily first so you choose the settings instead of inheriting them.
What Google says it delivers
Google’s headline claim is that advertisers using all three AI Max features see an average of 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS, compared with using search term matching alone. That is based on Google’s internal 2026 data for non-retail advertisers.
Read that carefully. The comparison is against search term matching on its own, not against a well-managed exact and phrase match campaign. It is also an average across advertisers with far more data than most small businesses. Treat it as a reason to test, not a promise.
The controls that matter for a small budget
AI Max is safe to test only if you use the guardrails. These are the ones worth setting before you switch anything on.
Brand exclusions
Stop your ads showing on competitors’ brand searches if you do not want to pay for them. Exclusions work at campaign level. Brand inclusions, which limit matching to specific brands, work at campaign and ad group level.
Locations of interest
For local businesses this is the important one. It lets an ad group reach people based on the location in their search, even when the match is keywordless. Pair it with tight location targeting so “roofer near Plano” does not pull in searches from three states away.
URL exclusions
Final URL expansion can pick any page on your domain. Exclude pages that should never receive paid traffic, such as careers, blog posts, privacy pages or old promotions. If an important page is being missed, add it with a URL inclusion.
Negative keywords
Your negative keyword lists still apply, and they matter more now. Carry over everything from your existing campaigns.
How to read AI Max results
The search terms report now shows “AI Max” as a match type, with a source column showing whether each match came from broad match expansion or keywordless matching. That makes it possible to audit what the new traffic actually is.
Check it weekly for the first month. Our guide to cutting wasted spend with the search terms report gives a 30-minute routine that works just as well for AI Max terms: sort by cost, flag irrelevant queries, add negatives, and note which landing pages Google chose.
A low-risk way to test Google Ads AI Max
- Pick one campaign that already converts and has conversion tracking you trust. Do not test on a campaign that is already struggling.
- Make sure it is not limited by budget. Google recommends this, and a budget-limited campaign cannot show you whether extra reach is worth paying for.
- Turn on search term matching and text customization first. Leave final URL expansion off until you have checked your site for pages that should never receive ad traffic.
- Set brand exclusions, locations of interest and URL exclusions before the test starts.
- Run it for four to six weeks, or until you have at least 30 conversions, then compare cost per conversion and lead quality with the previous period.
- Keep or roll back. If cost per lead rises and the new search terms are poor, go back to your previous match types while you still control the timing.
Whichever way it goes, the click still has to land somewhere persuasive. Run the pages AI Max chooses through our landing page checklist for paid ads.
When AI Max is likely to hurt
- Very small budgets. Under about $30 a day, the extra reach usually just spreads the same money across more, weaker searches.
- No reliable conversion tracking. If Google cannot see which clicks turn into leads, it optimises for clicks.
- Narrow service areas or niche services. Keywordless matching is most likely to wander here. Use locations of interest and negatives heavily.
- Thin websites. Text customization and URL expansion depend on your site content. If the site says little, the ads will too.
Common questions
Is AI Max a new campaign type?
No. It is a set of optional features inside a standard Search campaign.
Will my Dynamic Search Ads stop working?
You can no longer create new DSA campaigns from September 2026, and existing ones are scheduled to be upgraded to AI Max automatically in February 2027.
Can I use AI Max with exact match keywords?
Yes. Your keywords stay in place. Search term matching adds reach on top of them, and the search terms report shows which queries came from AI Max.
Does AI Max work for local service businesses?
It can, but only with tight location settings, locations of interest and strong negative keyword lists. Start with a single campaign.
Is Google Ads AI Max worth it for small businesses?
It can be for campaigns that already convert, have reliable tracking and are not limited by budget. For very small budgets or weak tracking, keep your current match types until those basics are fixed.
The short version
Google Ads AI Max is where Google Search is heading, and part of the switch happens without you. Get ahead of it: upgrade one proven campaign on your own terms, set brand, location and URL controls first, audit the search terms weekly, and judge it on cost per real lead. If you are still working out how much to put into search at all, start with how much a small business should spend on marketing.
